In our spiritual journey, we face battles that often go unseen but are no less real than any physical confrontation. The fight for faith is not a passive endeavor—it requires active engagement, knowledge, and a willingness to stand firm against forces that seek to diminish what we believe.
The Call to Battle
Scripture makes it clear: "Fight the good fight of faith. Lay hold on eternal life to which you were also called" (1 Timothy 6:12). This isn't a suggestion—it's a command. God doesn't promise to do all our fighting for us when it comes to faith. Instead, He equips us and expects us to engage in the battle ourselves.
Every fight has opposing sides, and the fight for faith is no different. Understanding who—or what—opposes our faith is the first step toward victory.
Enemy #1: Ignorance of God's Word
Romans 10:17 tells us that "faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the word of God." If faith comes through hearing the Word, then the lack of hearing becomes faith's first and most formidable enemy.
The prophet Hosea declared a sobering truth: "My people are destroyed for lack of knowledge" (Hosea 4:6). Notice the word "destroyed"—not just weakened or discouraged but destroyed. Ignorance of God's Word isn't merely unfortunate; it can be fatal to faith.
Many believers spend years convinced that God blesses some people but not others, that their prayers go unheard, or that they're just unlucky in life. Meanwhile, Scripture declares: "Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us with every spiritual blessing in the heavenly places in Christ" (Ephesians 1:3).
The difference between defeat and victory often comes down to knowledge. When we know what God's Word says about who we are and what we have in Christ, the enemy's lies lose their power.
We live in an unprecedented age of access to biblical knowledge. Technology puts endless resources at our fingertips. The question isn't whether we can learn—it's whether we will. Will we fight laziness, distraction, and the constant pull of entertainment and sit with God and His Word? Will we allow Him not just to hear our prayers, but to speak to us?
Our faith cannot exceed our knowledge of the truth (God's Word). This is a spiritual law as real as the physical law of gravity.
Enemy #2: Not Understanding Your New Identity
"Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; old things have passed away; behold, all things have become new" (2 Corinthians 5:17).
This isn't poetic language or spiritual metaphor—it's literal truth. The moment we accept Christ, something supernatural happens. We don't just get our sins forgiven with a ticket to heaven tucked in our pocket. We become entirely new creatures with a new nature, a new standing before God, and new privileges as His children.
Yet many believers never grasp this reality. They continue living as though they're still the old person, still unworthy, still separated from God by their imperfections.
Here's the transformative truth: "For He made Him who knew no sin to be sin for us, that we might become the righteousness of God in Him" (2 Corinthians 5:21). We have been made righteous—not through our own efforts, but through Christ.
This righteousness isn't something we earn or maintain through perfect behavior. It's a gift, given by grace, that positions us in right standing with God. And from that position of righteousness, our prayers become powerful. Scripture promises that "the effective, fervent prayer of a righteous man avails much" (James 5:17).
When we sin—and we all do—we don't lose our position. First John 1:9 assures us: "If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness." Confession restores us immediately to full fellowship and confidence before God.
Not knowing who we are in Christ keeps us weak, timid, and ineffective. But when we understand our identity as new creations, righteous in Christ, everything changes.
Enemy #3: Failing to Exercise Spiritual Authority
Jesus declared, "Behold, I give you the authority to trample on serpents and scorpions, and over all the power of the enemy, and nothing shall by any means hurt you" (Luke 10:19).
Read that again. We have been given authority over the enemy's power. Not someday. Not when we become super-spiritual. Right now.
Many Christians live in bondage, constantly defeated, wondering why God doesn't intervene. Meanwhile, they possess authority they've never learned to exercise. They have the right to use the name of Jesus—the name above every name—but they don't know it or don't believe it.
Jesus said, "These signs will follow those who believe: In My name they will cast out demons... they will lay hands on the sick, and they will recover" (Mark 16:17-18). The name of Jesus carries power and authority above every force of darkness, and believers have been given the privilege to use that name.
Spiritual darkness must submit to the power of Christ. And we have been authorized to wield that power. When we fail to stand in this authority, we remain victims rather than victors.
Enemy #4: Words of Doubt and Unbelief
"Let the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart be acceptable in Your sight, O Lord" (Psalm 19:14).
Our faith rises or falls with the words we speak. Hebrews 10:23 instructs us to "hold fast the confession of our hope without wavering, for He who promised is faithful."
Are we confessing what we hope for as though we already have it? Or are we constantly speaking doubt: "I hope it works out... I'm not sure... What if it doesn't happen?"
The moment words of doubt leave our lips, the enemy gains ground. This doesn't mean we deny reality or pretend problems don't exist. It means we speak in alignment with God's Word rather than our circumstances.
The Fight Continues
Make no mistake—there is an army against our faith, led by Satan himself, whose mission is to steal, kill, and destroy. He will never stop attacking our faith.
But here's the good news: God has equipped us for victory. He's given us His Word, His Spirit, His authority, and His promises. He's made us new creations with righteous standing before Him. And He walks with us every step of the way.
The question is: Will we fight?
Will we pursue knowledge of His Word? Will we stand in our identity in Christ? Will we exercise the authority we've been given? Will we act on what we believe? Will we speak words of faith?
As A.W. Tozer wrote, we must "shift our interest from the seen to the unseen, for the great unseen reality is God." When we do, we can "rise to unlimited heights."
The battle is real, but so is the victory available to those who fight the good fight of faith.
