There's a famous painting in the Louvre called "Checkmate." It depicts a man slumped over a chessboard, defeated, his head in his hands. Across from him sits the devil, grinning with satisfaction, certain of his victory. An angel watches from the background, and the tour guides explain it as an artist's rendering of someone who lost their battle with the devil.
But here's where the story gets interesting.
During one tour, a world champion chess player stood transfixed before this painting long after his group had moved on. When the guide returned to check on him, the chess master made a startling declaration: "They're going to have to change the name of this painting or change the painting itself—because it's wrong. I've been studying the board, and this isn't checkmate at all."
The king always has one more move.
This truth reverberates through every circumstance we face. When we're out of hope, out of options, and out of ideas—the King still has a move. When giants stand before us and all we have is a sling and a stone—the King has a move. The victory is already won, and God always has one more move.
The Foundation: God's Living Word
Building unshakable faith begins with understanding the integrity and power of God's Word. Hebrews 4:12 declares: "For the word of God is living and powerful and sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing even to the division of soul and spirit and of joints and marrow. And it is a discerner of thoughts and intents of the heart."
The written Word of God is Him speaking directly to His people. It's not just ancient text or religious literature—it's alive and active, ready to transform anyone who engages with it purposefully.
This isn't about quick devotional readings or scrolling through inspirational quotes on social media (though those have their place). It's about dedicated, focused, undistracted time alone with God—quiet solitude where He can speak directly through His Word. When we feed our spirits this way, revelation comes. Our eyes begin to see more of the spiritual realm and less of the temporary circumstances around us.
Romans 10:17 reminds us: "Faith comes by hearing and hearing by the word of God." Want your faith to increase? Immerse yourself in Scripture.
Complete and Equipped
Second Timothy 3:16-17 provides a powerful promise: "All scripture is given by inspiration of God and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness, that the man of God may be complete, thoroughly equipped for every good work."
Complete. Thoroughly equipped. For every good work.
God has given us everything we need in Scripture to be transformed from new creations in Christ into mature, equipped disciples ready to do Kingdom work. The Word develops us, transforms us, and prepares us for the specific good work God created for our lives.
Redeemed from Darkness
One of the most transformative truths for growing faith is understanding our redemption. The moment we confess Christ as Lord and Savior, we are instantly redeemed from the kingdom of darkness into the kingdom of God's dear Son.
Colossians 1:12-14 declares: "Giving thanks to the Father who has qualified us to be partakers of the inheritance of the saints in the light. He has delivered us from the power of darkness and conveyed us into the kingdom of the Son of his love, in whom we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of sins."
This isn't something we have to pray for or wonder if God will grant—it's automatic, part of the salvation package. Satan no longer has authority in our lives. By the blood of Jesus Christ, we've been delivered to victory.
Many believers spend years not knowing they possess this authority, allowing the enemy to run wild in their lives, families, and finances. Ignorance truly can kill. But when we grasp this truth and stand in it, everything changes.
Overcoming by Blood and Testimony
Revelation 12:11 reveals the formula for victory: "And they overcame him by the blood of the Lamb and by the word of their testimony, and they did not love their lives to the death."
Notice both elements: the blood of the Lamb (Jesus) and the word of our testimony (what comes out of our mouths). Our victory over the enemy is based on Christ's finished work, but it's activated by our confession of faith in God's Word.
When we fight with faith—standing on the blood of Jesus and speaking God's Word—we can overcome any attack, any test, any trial. We become more than conquerors.
This is where many believers miss it. If it ain't good, it ain't God. He's a good Father who doesn't put sickness, disease, or affliction on His children. We've been redeemed from these things. When we submit to God and resist the devil (James 4:7), he flees. When we become doers of the Word and not just hearers (James 1:22), faith explodes.
The Reality of New Creation
Understanding what happened at the moment of salvation is crucial for growing faith. Second Corinthians 5:17 proclaims: "Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; old things have passed away; behold, all things have become new."
We weren't just forgiven—we were recreated. The old person died, and a new one rose with Christ. We received the spirit and nature of God Himself. When God looks at believers, He sees Jesus.
Too many Christians live in shame, judging themselves by their past or by natural circumstances. But the truth is, that old person drowned when we went down and rose up with Christ. We're new creations with the power to do all things through Christ who strengthens us (Philippians 4:13).
The Temple of the Living God
Here's a truth that changes everything: "Do you not know that you are the temple of God and that the Spirit of God dwells in you?" (1 Corinthians 3:16).
We are the temple of the living God. The Holy Spirit doesn't just visit occasionally—He lives within believers. First John 4:4 confirms: "You are of God, little children, and have overcome them, because He who is in you is greater than he who is in the world."
The greater One is inside us. When we're at a loss, we can be still, thank God that His Spirit is within us, and praise Him for guidance. As we meditate on these truths and listen to God's Spirit, He illuminates what we've missed, gives direction, provides wisdom, and reveals His love and power.
Growing the Sapling into a Giant
Consider a tree that started as a small sapling over a century ago—so small that a house on logs was rolled right over it. Through the decades, that tree grew. By the 1950s, it was a few inches around. By the 1980s, it had grown substantially. Today, that sycamore tree stands taller than any tree on the prairie, with a trunk circumference of over twelve feet.
This is exactly what our faith can become. God gives us a measure of faith—a sapling—and He longs to see us grow it into a towering giant. But the growth is entirely up to us.
Will we keep seeking what we need to grow? Will our roots go deep into God's Word? Will we stand strong through the years and against every storm?
The Journey Forward
Faith isn't a destination to achieve but a glorious journey that continues until we stand before Jesus Christ. Without faith, it's impossible to please God (Hebrews 11:6). Faith gets us anything and takes us anywhere in God's kingdom. Without it, there can be no approach to God, no forgiveness, no deliverance, no salvation, no communion, no spiritual life at all.
Practical Steps Forward
Building unshakable faith requires intentional action:
As 2 Chronicles 15:7 encourages us: "But as for you, be strong and do not give up, for your work will be rewarded."
When circumstances say checkmate, remember: the King always has one more move. Stand strong in faith, and watch Him show up and show out in your life. We have victory in Christ.

- Develop a dedicated, focused prayer life
- Surround yourself with people of strong faith
- Find a place to serve
- Make seeking God the priority—before everything else
- Change what you consume—fill your mind with worship and truth
- Speak what God says about you and your situation
