Dedication

Why We Dedicate Our Children to the Lord

At The Rock Church Wimberley, we do baby dedications as a church tradition and not necessarily as an activity mandated in the Bible. The Scripture doesn’t explicitly command parents to dedicate their children but rather makes it clear that it’s the responsibility of the parents, as stewards of God, to shepherd their children: to know, love, honor, and obey the Lord. (Deuteronomy 6:4–7; Ephesians 6:1–4).

The Meaning of Baby Dedication

We have baby dedications to allow parents the opportunity to publicly join in a covenant with God, their children, and our church family. Baby dedications are essentially committing yourself as parents to follow Jesus, to model the Christian life, and to shepherd your children to know and love Jesus

What Baby Dedication Is Not

Baby dedication should not be viewed as a replacement for baptism—we pray your children will develop a relationship with Christ and, at some point, choose to get baptized with a clear understanding. Nor is it a magical means of salvation or protection for your child. Baby dedication is simply an outward act of the parents’ inward commitment to God.

“Hear, O Israel: The LORD our God, the LORD is one!
You shall love the LORD your God with all your heart,
with all your soul, and with all your strength.
“And these words which I command you today shall be in your heart.
You shall teach them diligently to your children, and shall talk of them when you sit in your house,
when you walk by the way, when you lie down, and when you rise up."

Deuteronomy 6:4-7

" Children, obey your parents in the Lord, for this is right.  “Honor your father and mother,” which is the first commandment with promise: “that it may be well with you and you may live long on the earth.”
And you, fathers, do not provoke your children to wrath, but bring them up in the training and admonition of the Lord."

Ephesians 6:1-4

Train up a child in the way he should go,
And when he is old he will not depart from it.

Proverbs 22:6
