Fatherhood was one of the first assignments God gave to humanity. Immediately after creating Adam and Eve, God commanded them to "be fruitful and multiply" (Genesis 1:28). While God's primary purpose for marriage was to fill the earth with offspring, providing the means to produce children was merely the beginning of His expectations for fathers.
Any man can make a child. It takes a real man to be a father. And it takes an even more disciplined man to be a Godly father.
Most men want to be good fathers, but many have little understanding of what Godly fatherhood actually looks like. The Bible provides clear guidance, revealing characteristics that distinguish a Godly father from merely a biological one. More importantly, Scripture shows us how critical it is for fathers to live out these characteristics in front of their children.
The Principle of Duplication
There's a powerful principle woven throughout Scripture called the principle of duplication: you will produce after your own kind. Jesus laid out this principle clearly in John 5:19: "The son can do nothing of himself, but what he sees the father do. For whatever he does, the son also does in like manner."
What your children see you do, they will do. This isn't a suggestion or a possibility—it's a spiritual law. Your kids, especially your sons, are going to do exactly what you do, regardless of what you say. This means fathers must work diligently to be Godly examples so their children will become Godly examples as well.
To be a Godly example, you must have Godly characteristics on the inside. This requires getting God's Word from the book into your heart, where it transforms you from the inside out.
Characteristic #1: Know God and Put Him First
A Godly father knows God, has a relationship with God, and always puts God first. Many people know about God, but knowing God intimately and making Him your number one priority is different.
Mark 12:30 commands: "You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and all your mind, and with all your strength. This is the first commandment." All means all—more than your wife, more than your job, more than sports or hobbies.
This means a Godly father must have an active prayer life. James 5:16 reminds us that "the effectual, fervent prayer of a righteous man avails much." A Godly father must read and study the Bible and lead his family in Bible study. As 2 Timothy 2:15 instructs, we must be diligent to present ourselves approved to God, workers who do not need to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth.
A Godly father must attend church regularly. Faith doesn't come by what you heard one time; faith comes by continually hearing the Word of God. Hebrews 10:25 warns against "forsaking the assembly of ourselves together as is the manner of some, but exhorting one another and so much more as you see the day approaching."
Being a Godly father means knowing God and not being ashamed of your faith in Jesus. You're not a closet Christian who only acknowledges God on Sundays. Romans 1:16 declares: "I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ, for it is the power of God to salvation for everyone who believes."
When the ways of God are your number one priority, they will become the number one priority in your children's lives.
Characteristic #2: Express Godly Love
A Godly father knows how to express the God-kind of love. First, he expresses this love by loving and honoring his wife. It's been said that the best gift a father can give his children is to love their mother in front of them.
When your kids see loving interactions between their dad and mom—when they see dad walking beside mom, holding her hand, opening doors for her, and honoring and showing respect—it leaves an indelible impression on their lives. Sons will naturally seek to imitate this behavior in their future marriages. Daughters will learn what kind of behavior to expect from a loving husband.
Ephesians 5:25-29 instructs: "Husbands, love your wives just as Christ also loved the church and gave himself for her... So husbands ought to love their own wives as their own bodies. He who loves his wife loves himself."
Your behavior toward your wife is vitally important to future generations. This is part of your legacy.
A Godly father also expresses God's love toward his children by training them up in the way they should go (Proverbs 22:6). There are two biblical ways of training children: teaching them the Word of God and living a Godly life yourself.
Deuteronomy 6:6-7 commands: "These words which I command you today shall be in your heart. You shall teach them diligently to your children, and shall talk of them when you sit in your house, when you walk by the way, and when you lie down and when you rise up."
The second way fathers express God's love is through discipline. Proverbs 13:24 states: "He who spares his rod hates his son, but he who loves him will discipline him promptly." The Message Bible puts it this way: "A refusal to correct is a refusal to love. Love your children by disciplining them promptly."
Characteristic #3: Live a Disciplined Life
Children need to see a dad who not only disciplines them in Godly principles but also lives a disciplined life himself. They need to see a dad who lives according to God's principles, not man's.
Kids are smarter than you think. They will eventually recognize a double standard. "Do what I say, not what I do" won't cut it. That attitude is double-mindedness, and your children see through it.
It's hard to tell a child not to do something when you're doing it yourself. It's ridiculous to tell your child not to curse while you curse people out on the phone. It's ridiculous to tell your kids that drinking kills brain cells while they watch you drink beer on Saturday night. It's ridiculous to tell a child how important church is while you stay home and watch the game.
Your children aren't going to do what you tell them to do unless they see you do it first.
Characteristic #4: Stand for What Is Morally Right
Godly fathers stand up for what is morally right. They do not allow themselves to be controlled by outside influences or addictions such as alcohol, drugs, or pornography. These addictions create a home environment marked by insecurities, fears, and depression.
Children tend to adopt whatever gods they see their parents worshiping. Exodus 20:5 warns about "visiting the iniquity of the fathers on the children to the third and fourth generations."
Godly fathers are not controlled by outside influences—they are controlled by the Holy Spirit. Ephesians 5:18 says: "Do not be drunk with wine in which is dissipation, but be filled with the Spirit."
When your children see you run to Jesus with your problems instead of running to a bottle, they'll do the same thing. A Godly father leads his children by example, teaching them not only to do what is morally right but also how to avoid what is morally wrong.
Characteristic #5: Provide Protection
Children need to see a dad who provides them with protection, both physically and spiritually. Men are uniquely equipped by their Heavenly Father to protect their families. God has given fathers both the physical strength and the natural desire to protect their children and household.
John 15:13 says: "Greater love has no man than this, than to lay down one's life for his friends"—and especially for family.
But there's more to protecting your family than fighting natural battles. You must also fight in the spirit realm through prayer. This means setting high moral standards for the programs your children watch on television, the games they play, and their internet usage.
You need to guard what your children are letting into their eye gates and ear gates. Take time to scrutinize the dialogue and behavioral patterns that games and media are embedding in the minds and hearts of your kids. If the dialogue and behavioral patterns don't line up with the teachings of Jesus Christ, get rid of them.
Proverbs 4:23 warns: "Out of the heart spring the issues of life." What goes in the ears and eyes gets embedded in the heart.
Godly fathers are proactive in protecting their children from spiritual predators. Know who your kids are befriending online. Guard them against sexual temptations, inappropriate content, and ideologies that contradict God's design.
Your Day to Change- Call to Action
If you've accepted Jesus Christ as your Lord and Savior, you are a Godly father. You have the Holy Spirit dwelling inside you, and He makes you Godly. Being a Godly father carries Godly responsibilities.
If you haven't perfected these five characteristics in your life, keep at it. Don't quit. And if you haven't been a godly father but want to change, today is your day. You can change everything by accepting Jesus and allowing His Word to transform you from the inside out.
We serve a miracle-working God, and transformation is always possible through His grace.
