Love and War: The Call for the Church to Rise

There is a tension at the heart of the Christian life that does not resolve easily. It is the tension between God's overwhelming, boundless love for his creation and the very real, urgent war being waged against everything that love has built. To understand one without the other is to misunderstand both. And right now, the church cannot afford to misunderstand either.

The Foundation: A Love Without Limit
 
Before anything else can be said, before any call to action or any sobering assessment of the times, the foundation must be laid. God loves you. Not in a casual, greeting-card sense, but in a way that defies full comprehension.

John 3:16 reminds us that God's love for the world was so immense that he gave his only Son, so that those who believe in him would not perish but have eternal life. The verse that follows, John 3:17, is equally important: God did not send his Son to condemn the world, but to save it. This is not the portrait of a distant, judgmental deity waiting to punish. This is a Father who moved heaven and earth to reach his children.

2 Peter 3:9 reinforces this, describing God as extraordinarily patient, not wanting anyone to perish, but desiring that all would come to repentance. Ezekiel 33:11 echoes it from the Old Testament, where God declares plainly that he takes no pleasure in the death of the wicked, but longs for them to turn and live. 1 John 4:16 brings it all together in a single, staggering statement: God is love.

This is where everything begins. Not with condemnation. Not with a list of failures. With love.

One clarification deserves to be made plainly: God sends no one to hell. That is a choice human beings make. God has made a way into life, into his presence, into his kingdom. That way is Jesus Christ. The door is open. The invitation is standing.

The Field: Where We Are in the Game

Here is a helpful way to think about the spiritual life. Imagine a baseball team made up of players at every possible skill level, from a child swinging at a ball on a tee for the first time to seasoned veterans who have played the game for decades. Now imagine all of them on the same field, receiving the same coaching, at the same time.

That is the church.

On any given Sunday, in any congregation, someone may have never heard the gospel and may not know what to make of it. There may be someone in the grip of addiction, depression, or despair, desperate for something to change. Someone may have walked with God for fifty years. The same message must reach all of them.

Salvation is where the game begins. Jesus told Nicodemus in John 3:3 that unless a person is born again, they cannot see the kingdom of God. This is the moment a player steps onto the field and says, I want to play. But here is the hard truth: far too many who take that first step never move beyond it. They remain on the beginner's field for years, even decades, never advancing, never growing, settling into a kind of spiritual comfort that is, in reality, no comfort at all.

Jesus said in John 10:10 that he came so that we might have life, and have it more abundantly. The Christian life was never meant to be merely survival. It was designed for something far greater. Sanctification, the ongoing process of being set apart for God and made holy, is not optional. It is the entire journey. And Christians should never stop progressing.

The more time you spend with the coach, doing what he teaches, the faster you grow. The more the believer commits to prayer, to scripture, to genuine obedience, the more the game accelerates. There is always more in Christ. There is always a next level. The best is yet to come.

The War: What Is Actually at Stake

Second Timothy 2:1-5 does not mince words. It describes the Christian life in terms of soldiers, athletes, and endurance. It calls believers to be strong, to commit to faithful living and faithful teaching, and to endure hardship as good soldiers of Jesus Christ.

Here is the sobering reality. This nation is in trouble. The cultural and moral landscape has shifted dramatically away from the values and principles that once defined a people who sought God. What has been allowed to take root is, from a biblical perspective, deeply troubling. And the church, by and large, has responded with comfort rather than courage.

Second Timothy 2:4 warns that no soldier entangles himself in the affairs of everyday life, because his purpose is to please the one who enlisted him. This is the challenge. Too many believers are so wrapped up in the distractions and demands of daily life that the war raging at the doorstep goes unnoticed, or worse, ignored.

Dr. Tony Evans once said that to change a nation, you must change a state. To change a state, you must change a county. To change a county, a city. To change a city, you must change a community. To change a community, a family. And to change a family, you must first change a man. It starts with the individual. It starts with an honest look in the mirror, the mirror of God's word, and a willingness to let him change what needs changing.

The Promise: A Condition and a Guarantee

Second Chronicles 7:14 stands as one of Scripture's most powerful conditional promises. God tells his people that if they will humble themselves, pray, seek his face, and turn from their wicked ways, he will hear from heaven, forgive their sin, and heal their land. That is not wishful thinking. That is a covenant promise from the God who keeps every word he speaks.

The conditions are real. Humility. Prayer. Seeking. Repentance. But the promise on the other side of those conditions is equally real.

The church is not defeated. It is sleeping. And it is time to wake up, rise, and remember who we serve. We serve a God whose love has no end and whose power has no ceiling. The war is real, but so is the victory. And the victory belongs to the one who has already conquered sin, death, and darkness.

His name is Jesus Christ. And he is calling his army to rise.
