Troubling news is everywhere today. Wars and rumors of wars dominate headlines. Lawlessness seems to be rising. Families across the country struggle to put food on the table. Darkness appears to be spreading in places where light once held firm. For many people, simply turning on the news has become an exercise in anxiety management.
Yet, in the midst of all this, a profound, countercultural invitation is extended to every believer: you do not have to be troubled.
That is not wishful thinking. It is not a motivational slogan printed on a coffee mug. It is a direct instruction from Jesus himself. In Matthew 24, as His disciples asked Him about the signs of the end of the age, Jesus described wars, famines, pestilences, and earthquakes — and then said plainly, "See that you are not troubled." He was not dismissing the reality of hard times. He was preparing his people to walk through them without being consumed. The troubles He described did not surprise Him. They were, in His own words, the beginning of birth pains — painful, yes, but purposeful, and leading somewhere.
The question worth sitting with is this: if Jesus knew all of this was coming and still told us not to be troubled, then living untroubled must actually be possible. So how do we get there?
The Battlefield Is the Mind
The answer begins with understanding where the real battle is being fought. The enemy of your soul is not primarily interested in your circumstances. He is interested in your mind. Proverbs 23:7 tells us that as a person thinks in his heart, so he is. The devil knows this verse better than most Christians do. He understands that the doorway into your life runs directly through your thoughts. Satan cannot touch your spirit — if you belong to Jesus, that ground is occupied and protected. But your mind is a different story, and it is contested territory every single day.
This is why what you give your attention to matters so much. What you listen to, what you dwell on, what you allow to take root in your thinking — all of it has consequences. The enemy is not random in his approach. He is strategic. He watches how you respond to pressure. He listens to what you say when things get hard. And if he can get troubling thoughts to take up residence in your mind, he knows those thoughts will eventually find their way out of your mouth.
The Lesson of the Spies
One of the most vivid illustrations of this principle appears in Numbers 13 and 14. God had already told his people that the promised land was theirs. He did not say, "Go check it out and see if you think you can handle it." He said, "Go and possess it." God sent twelve spies ahead, and when they returned, ten brought back what the Bible calls a bad report.
Yes, the land was everything God said it would be. Yes, the fruit was enormous, and the soil was rich. But the cities were fortified. The inhabitants were powerful. And there were giants — descendants of Anak, men of such staggering stature that the spies described themselves as grasshoppers by comparison.
Here is what matters: the congregation of Israel had not seen any of this. They had not laid eyes on a single giant. But the ten spies' words painted such a vivid, overwhelming picture that the people wept all night. They complained against their leaders. They blamed God. They said it would have been better to die in Egypt or in the wilderness than to face what lay ahead.
Only two spies — Caleb and Joshua — stood apart. They had seen the same land, the same cities, the same giants. But their response was completely different. Caleb quieted the people and declared that they were "well able to overcome." He didn't deny the giants. He simply refused to let the obstacle's size redefine God's faithfulness.
The congregation never did enter the promised land. They wandered in the wilderness for forty years. The reason is sobering: the giants didn't defeat them. They were defeated by their own words. God said to Moses in Numbers 14:28 that just as the people had spoken in his hearing, so it would be done to them. They had said they would die in the wilderness. And they did.
Words Create Worlds
This is not an isolated Old Testament principle. Jesus echoed it in Mark 11:23, describing how faith-filled words spoken over impossible situations can produce real, tangible results. The principle runs throughout Scripture: what we think, believe, and speak often becomes what we walk in. Defeat spoken long enough becomes defeat experienced. Victory declared in faith becomes victory lived.
This is why 2 Corinthians 10:3-5 is such a critical passage for the believer. The apostle Paul describes a warfare that is not physical but spiritual, and he identifies the weapons available to us as mighty through God. The assignment? Pulling down strongholds. Casting down imaginations—those images the enemy constructs in our minds to convince us the worst outcome is the only outcome. And bringing every thought into captivity to the obedience of Christ, aligned with the Word of God.
A Practical Path Forward
Living untroubled doesn’t happen by accident. It requires a deliberate choice to guard your thoughts, strengthen your faith, and be mindful of your words. It means being intentional about which voices you let influence you. When faced with a troubling medical report, financial hardship, or frightening news, you must choose to stand on the truth of God’s Word rather than agree with fear. You cannot allow the majority’s opinion or the appearance of your circumstances to determine your reality when God has already spoken His promises over your life.
The world may grow darker, and the signs of the times may become more intense. But when your life is firmly rooted in the Word of God, your mind is guarded by His truth, and your words align with His promises, you can experience His peace even in the midst of uncertainty. Peace doesn't depend on what is happening around you; it comes from trusting the One who remains faithful through it all.
You do not have to live troubled by what you see or hear. Choose today to trust God, stand on His Word, and walk in His peace.

Heavenly Father, help us to remain untroubled in these troubling times, keeping our hearts anchored in Your truth and our minds fixed on You. When fear, uncertainty, and chaos surround us, remind us that You remain on the throne, Your Word never fails, and Your promises stand firm. Teach us to resist the spirit of fear, guard our thoughts, and walk in Your supernatural peace, no matter what is happening in the world around us. We choose to trust You, stand firm in Your Word, and live confidently in the peace that comes from knowing You are in control, in Jesus’ mighty name, Amen.
