There is a question worth sitting with today, one that cuts straight to the heart of how we live our daily lives as believers: What are you giving your attention to?
It sounds simple enough. But the honest answer to that question reveals more about the state of our faith than almost anything else. It exposes whether we are truly walking with God or simply going through the motions of a Christian life while being quietly ruled by worry, circumstance, and the noise of the world around us.
Walking by Faith Is a Lifestyle
In 2 Corinthians 5:7, the apostle Paul makes a declaration that is both straightforward and profoundly challenging. The verse communicates that believers are to walk by faith and not by sight, meaning we are to live our everyday lives trusting in a God we cannot physically see rather than relying on what our natural senses tell us. The word "walk" in the original Greek does not simply describe a physical action. It describes a lifestyle, a way of moving through every moment of every day.
That means the way we go to work, the way we raise our children, the way we respond to a difficult diagnosis or a financial setback, all of it is meant to be governed by faith in God and His Word. Not by what we see. Not by what we feel. Not by what the loudest voices around us are saying.
The Amplified Bible expands on this verse beautifully, describing the life of faith as one where we regulate our lives and conduct ourselves by our conviction and belief respecting our relationship to God, with trust and holy fervor. That phrase, "regulate our lives," is striking. It means faith is not something we reach for only in a crisis. It is the daily standard by which everything is measured.
The Problem With Living by Your Senses
Most of us, if we are honest, have spent significant portions of our lives doing the exact opposite of what that verse describes. We have walked by what we see, what we feel, and what we hear others say. When circumstances arise, our natural instinct is to react to them, to give them our full attention, to talk about them, to worry over them, and to measure our situation by what appears to be true rather than by what God has declared to be true.
This is not a condemnation. It is simply the default setting of human nature. But it is a default that God calls us to override through a living, active, growing relationship with Him.
Here is a truth worth considering: the longer you give your attention to a problem, the more your faith weakens. You cannot simultaneously fix your focus on the size of your storm and on the power of the God who commands the wind and the waves. One will always crowd out the other. The enemy of your soul understands this perfectly, which is why 1 Peter 5:8 describes him as one who roams about seeking whom he may devour. His strategy is not complicated. He simply wants to capture your attention and hold it on the problem until fear, doubt, and anxiety have done their work.
Relationship Is the Foundation of Faith
Here is where the message becomes deeply personal. Faith is not a formula. It is not a technique you apply in moments of crisis. Faith is the natural overflow of a genuine, daily, cultivated relationship with God.
Think about it this way. You would never place your complete trust in a person you do not know. You would not hand someone the keys to everything precious in your life based on a single introduction. Trust is built over time, through consistent interaction, through shared experience, through learning who someone is and proving their word to be reliable.
The same is true with God. You cannot trust deeply in someone you rarely spend time with. You cannot have mountain-moving faith if the only time you open your Bible or speak to God is when the storm is already at your door. The Malachi 3:10 principle of testing and proving God's Word is a powerful example of this. When a believer steps out in obedience, putting action to what they believe, they do not just know God's faithfulness intellectually. They prove it. And once you have proven it, your trust in Him grows in a way that no argument and no storm can easily shake.
This is why a daily walk with God is not optional for the believer who wants to live in genuine victory. It is the very infrastructure of a faith-filled life. Reading the Word, praying, spending time in fellowship with God, these are not religious duties to check off a list. They are the building blocks of a relationship that will hold when everything around you is shaking.
Storm-Proofing Your Life Before the Storm Comes
No one boards up their windows after the hurricane has already made landfall. Preparation happens before the storm arrives. The same wisdom applies to our spiritual lives. Jesus Himself acknowledged in Luke that storms would come. The question He was concerned with was not whether they would come, but what kind of foundation you had built before they arrived.
A life built on the Word of God, on a consistent and growing relationship with the Lord, is a life that can withstand the pressure. Not because the storms are less severe, but because the one living inside you is greater than anything that can come against you. The declaration found in 1 John 4:4, that the one who is in you is greater than the one who is in the world, is not a bumper sticker sentiment. It is a covenant truth meant to be lived out loud.
The Invitation
So the question returns, and it deserves a real answer. What are you giving your attention to? Are you giving it to the problem or to the problem solver? To the pressure or to the promise? To past failures or to present victory in Christ?
Today is a good day to make a decision. Not a perfect decision, because none of us arrive at perfection overnight. But a directional one. A decision to build your relationship with God intentionally, daily, and persistently. To prove His Word in your own life. To keep your attention fixed on Him when the winds begin to blow.
The greater one lives in you. It is time to start living like it.

Heavenly Father, help us turn our attention away from the noise, worry, and trials of this world and fix our eyes firmly on You. Teach us to walk by faith and not by sight every day, cultivating a deep, intentional relationship with You long before the storms arrive. Strengthen our hearts to trust Your Word above our natural circumstances so that anxiety and fear find no room in our lives. Remind us always that the Greater One lives within us, empowering us to stand steadfast and live in Your daily victory. Amen.
