The Nation Who Forgets God

There is a warning embedded in the very first pages of Scripture, and it has never stopped being relevant. From the moment God spoke to Adam in the garden, the enemy has been running the same play. He has never needed a new strategy because the old one keeps working. He gets people to question the Word of God, minimize the consequences of disobeying it, and then appeal to the pride and appetite already stirring within them. Three lures. That is all he has ever needed.

Genesis 3 lays it out plainly. The serpent does not come at Eve with brute force. He comes with a question: "Did God really say that?" He confuses her about what God actually said, adds something God never said, and then tells her the consequences God warned about aren't really that serious. Before long, she is holding the fruit. And Adam, standing right there with her, says nothing. He fails to lead. And in that moment, everything changes.

This is not just an ancient story. This is the pattern of every generation that has drifted away from God. Doubt the Word. Minimize the consequences. Feed the flesh. And watch the whole thing unravel.

The book of Psalms declares it simply and without apology: blessed is the nation whose God is the Lord (Psalm 33:12). The history of America is, in many ways, a testimony to that truth. From its earliest days, this nation was shaped by men and women who feared God, built their laws and communities on biblical principles, and sought to honor the Lord in public life. The prosperity, the freedom, and the influence this country has carried across the world did not emerge from human cleverness alone. It was the fruit of a people who acknowledged God.

But that is not where America stands today.

In 2006, a prominent political leader declared that America is no longer just a Christian nation, but a Jewish nation, a Muslim nation, a Buddhist nation, a Hindu nation, and a nation of non-believers. Whatever one thinks of religious freedom, which is a real and important value, that statement reveals something sobering about the trajectory of this country's identity. Blessed is the nation whose God is the Lord. If God is simply one option among many, the blessing is not guaranteed.

The Israelites walked this road before us, and their story is a mirror worth looking into.

In Exodus 32, while Moses is on the mountain receiving God's law, the people below are already building a golden calf and calling it their god. The Lord's response is staggering. He tells Moses to step aside so his wrath can consume them entirely. He is ready to start over. Moses intercedes, and God relents. But the pattern repeats itself throughout the wilderness years. Deuteronomy 9 recounts it again. God says he was prepared to destroy them and blot their name from under heaven.

This is not a God who shrugs at disobedience. This is not a God who accepts second place. The first and greatest commandment, which Jesus himself affirms in Matthew 22, calls us to love the Lord our God with all our heart, soul, and mind. God reiterates this command throughout Scripture because it is not a suggestion. It is the foundation of everything.

Isaiah 29:13 delivers one of the most uncomfortable diagnoses in all of Scripture. God looks at his people and says they draw near to him with their mouths and honor him with their lips, but their hearts are far from him. Their worship has become a learned ritual, repeated without any real thought or meaning. Jesus quotes this passage directly in Matthew 15, calling out the hypocrisy plainly. In vain they worship me, he says.

This is the condition of much of the church today. Saved, perhaps. Attending, maybe. But hearts far from God. Mouths saying the right things while golden calves fill the pasture. Little league games, golf courses, deer leases, and busy schedules quietly pushing God to the margins. The wealth God provides becoming more important than the God who provides it.

James 1:22 warns that those who hear the Word but do not do it deceive themselves. And self-deception is perhaps the most dangerous condition a believer can be in, because it feels like everything is fine when it is not.

The prophets repeatedly called God's people back from this edge. Joel 2:12-13 urges a return to God with all the heart, with fasting and mourning, rending the heart rather than the garments. Hosea 6:1 calls the people to return to the Lord, promising that He will heal what He has torn. Isaiah 55:6-7 pleads with the wicked to forsake their ways and return to God, who will abundantly pardon.

The consistent message across every prophet, every testament, and every generation is this: God is ready to forgive and restore. He is slow to anger and quick to show mercy. He has never stopped being willing to bless an obedient people. The failure has never been on His end.

The promise of 2 Chronicles 7:14 stands as both a challenge and an invitation. If God's people, called by His name, will humble themselves, pray, seek his face, and turn from their wicked ways, then God will hear from heaven, forgive their sin, and heal their land. This is not a political strategy. It is a spiritual one. And it begins not with the nation but with the church. Not with the culture but with the individual heart.

Nehemiah 2:18 records a moment when a broken people looked at the rubble around them and decided to act. They set their hands to the good work. That is the call today.

The question is not whether God is able to restore this nation. The question is whether his people are willing to return to Him fully, not in Word only, but in heart and in deed.

Not God when it is convenient. Not God somewhere in the middle of everything else.
God first. God above all. God as God.

That is where blessing begins.
