From Converts to Disciples: The Call the Church Cannot Afford to Ignore

A quiet crisis is unfolding inside the walls of many churches today. It does not announce itself with drama or controversy. It simply shows up in the gap between what the church was commissioned to do and what it has gradually settled for doing instead. The gap between making converts and making disciples.

These are not the same thing. And the difference matters more than most people realize.

Jesus Last Words That Changed Everything

Before Jesus ascended into heaven, He gathered His followers and spoke what would be among His final words on earth. In Matthew 28:18-20, He declared that all authority in heaven and on earth had been given to Him, and then He issued a command that was not optional, not a suggestion, and not limited to a select group of spiritual professionals. He told His disciples to go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them and teaching them to obey everything He had commanded.

Not some of it. Not the parts that are easy to accept. Everything.

These words, commonly called the Great Commission, are the church's foundational mission statement. Not a program. Not a vision for a particular season. The permanent, non-negotiable purpose of every believer who claims to follow Jesus Christ.

And yet, somewhere along the way, a significant portion of the modern church drifted from this commission. The drift was slow and subtle, shaped by cultural pressure and a desire to remain relevant. The result is a church that in many places looks more like an entertainment venue than a discipleship community, one that prioritizes crowd size over spiritual depth, emotional experience over genuine transformation, and cultural acceptance over Biblical truth.

What a Disciple Actually Is

The word disciple is used often in Christian circles, but it is worth pausing to define it clearly. A disciple is not simply someone who attends church regularly or who prayed a prayer at an altar call years ago. A disciple is a born-again believer who hungers for the Word of God, who daily embraces and obeys that Word, and who is committed to becoming a living example of the Word to everyone they encounter.

That is a high standard. It is also the standard Jesus set.

In Matthew 22:37, Jesus described the greatest commandment as loving God with all of one's heart, soul, and mind. That kind of love is not passive. It is not a feeling reserved for Sunday mornings. It is an active, daily surrender of one's entire life to the Lordship of Jesus Christ.

This is where many people draw back. Following Jesus is appealing until His teachings begin to confront a comfortable lifestyle. It was true during His earthly ministry, when crowds that once numbered in the thousands thinned out as His words grew more demanding. It is equally true today.

Discipleship requires repentance. In Matthew 4:17, Jesus' first public message called people to repent because the kingdom of heaven was near. Discipleship requires forgiveness. Matthew 6:14-15 makes clear that our own forgiveness is connected to our willingness to extend it to others. Discipleship requires love, not the sentimental kind, but the kind described in 1 John 4:7, which flows from God Himself and reaches even those who are difficult to love.

None of these are popular messages. But they are true.

The Problem With Just Getting People Saved

There is nothing wrong with evangelism. In fact, Mark 16:15 makes clear that believers are called to go into all the world and preach the gospel to every person. Leading someone to faith in Jesus Christ is beautiful and necessary.

But the commission does not stop at salvation. A church culture that focuses exclusively on getting people saved, without following up with discipleship, produces converts who never grow. People say a prayer, receive assurance that they are saved, and then return to living exactly as before, with no hunger for change, no engagement with Scripture, and no transformation of character.

A person can be saved and not be a disciple. Salvation is a moment. Discipleship is a lifelong process.

That process begins at salvation and continues through surrender and obedience to God's Word. The Holy Spirit empowers it, and genuine Christian community nurtures it. It is not about arriving at some finished state of spiritual perfection. It is about continual growth, continual correction, and continual yielding to the One who is doing the work of transformation from the inside out. As Philippians 1:6 reminds us, the One who began a good work will be faithful to complete it.

The Church That Was Always Meant to Exist

The early church described in Acts was not impressive by today's metrics. It did not have sophisticated production, multi-campus strategies, or social media reach. What it had was the unmistakable presence of God and people whose lives Jesus had changed so thoroughly that even their critics could not deny it.

Acts 4:13 describes how the religious leaders of the day observed Peter and John, men who were uneducated and ordinary by any external measure, and marveled at their boldness. The reason was simple. These men had been with Jesus. Their lives bore its mark.

That is still the goal. When people encounter a genuine disciple of Jesus Christ, something should stand out. Not a performance of religion, but the quiet, steady evidence of a life being shaped by the Word of God. That difference opens doors. It invites questions. And those questions create opportunities to share the truth that changed everything.

The Question Every Believer Must Answer

In Isaiah 6:8, the prophet heard God's voice asking who would go, who would be sent. And Isaiah answered without hesitation. Here am I. Send me.

That is the posture of a disciple.

Jesus is still calling His followers to go. Not just to attend. Not just to observe. To go, to grow, to be changed by His Word, and then to invest that change into the lives of others.

Discipleship is not a destination. It is a journey. And it begins with the simple, daily decision to follow.
Lord Jesus, thank You for calling us not only to believe in You, but to follow You with our whole hearts and lives. Give us a hunger for Your Word, a willingness to repent, and the courage to obey You even when it requires sacrifice or change. Transform us into true disciples whose lives reflect Your love, truth, and grace, and use us to help others grow in their walk with You. May we be able to say with willing hearts, “Here am I. Send me.”
Amen.
